GMAT Meaning and Purpose
GMAT stands for Graduate Management Admission Test. It is used by many business schools around the world to evaluate applicants for MBA, business master’s, management, finance, analytics, and related graduate programs.

GMAT helps business schools understand whether a student is ready for the academic challenge of an MBA program.
For Business Skills
The exam checks reasoning, logic, data interpretation, problem-solving, and decision-making ability.
For Global Applications
GMAT is accepted by many business schools worldwide and helps compare students from different academic systems.
Current GMAT Exam Structure
The current GMAT has three main sections. Each section is 45 minutes long, and the total exam time is 2 hours and 15 minutes, excluding one optional 10-minute break.
| GMAT Section | Questions | Time | What It Measures | Score Range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Quantitative Reasoning | 21 Questions | 45 Minutes | Problem solving, arithmetic, algebra, numerical reasoning, and logical calculation. | 60–90 |
| Verbal Reasoning | 23 Questions | 45 Minutes | Reading comprehension, critical reasoning, argument analysis, and English-based reasoning. | 60–90 |
| Data Insights | 20 Questions | 45 Minutes | Data interpretation, table analysis, graphics, multi-source reasoning, and business data literacy. | 60–90 |
How GMAT Scoring Works
The current GMAT total score ranges from 205 to 805. Each section — Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Data Insights — is scored from 60 to 90. Your total score is calculated from all three sections.
The new score scale is different from the old GMAT 200–800 scale. Because of this, old GMAT scores and current GMAT scores should not be compared directly. Percentile ranking is more useful for understanding competitiveness.
